Last weekend, my friends and I decided to take on our first exhaust replacement job. The 1999 XJ had a massive exhaust leak, as both the muffler and the tailpipe were riddled with rust holes.

Removing the piping was fairly straightforward. After a few sawzall cuts, we were left with a rusted muffler box hanging from the catalytic converter piping. “Let’s hit it with a hammer!” we said. “ How hard can it be?” Well, after a few good whacks, the muffler disintegrated, leaving behind a rusty piece of pipe. This is where things got interesting. We resorted to hammering the end of the pipe with an exhaust separation chisel in between rounds of heating the area with a blowtorch. Which worked well! Note the high-tech O2 sensor heat shield.

From there, finishing the job was a breeze. Just a matter of assembling and reattaching a new OEM system, which made the Jeep’s big straight six unbelievably quiet. That first startup was one of the greatest automotive moments my friends and I have experienced together. Ultimately, that’s what the car hobby is all about, as far as I’m concerned. Sharing unforgettable automotive moments with fellow gearheads.

Jobs like this are the reason why my friends and I view the cars we drive as “our” automobiles, not simply objects owned by one person. We experience them together, through adventures, breakdowns, and difficult repairs. I’m proud of our eclectic taste, and perpetually thankful that I have great friends who love cars just as much as I do.

Exhaust notwithstanding, that’s a pretty clean XJ!

I thought this was going to be about a Jaaag. Bloody Jeep drivers :)

After my last bodge job on my exhaust, I reckon there’s more patch than pipe. Works fine, though. I don’t understand why anyone ever replaces one...

Absolutely, it’s SO clean. Those pictures don’t do it justice. The paint is mint and so is the interior. We’re so into it that there will be a second XJ added to the fleet this winter lol.

Jeep parts are dirt cheap! So replacing the exhaust made sense. Jaaaaags are great though. I want an XJ-S. And a MK1 XJ6. And a MKX. The list goes on...

This must be the tenth post I clicked on expecting a Jag forgetting that firstly Jeep are hardly a brand known for reliability and second, it’s winter at the moment. So of course people are doing maintenance on their Jeeps yet watch tomorrow when it happens again.

Jeep parts can’t be as cheap as steel cans and exhaust paste... Can they?
